AIMS & DESCRIPTION OF THE TOOL (general description, goals, what it consists of)
AEco is a fast and versatile tool for assessing aircraft environmental impacts that can easily be integrated into conceptual design workflow. The streamlined LCA algorithm implemented can be used to quickly assess cradle-to-grave life cycle impacts and to compare different aircraft configurations and scenarios. The tool can be used alongside other modelling and assessment applications, in multidisciplinary design optimization frameworks, aiding decision makers to choose in which aircraft concept to focus development efforts. It can also help guide designersers towards more environmental friendly materials and manufacturing processes. For scenario evaluations, AEco allows for large changes in scope to be performed rapidly, which can be a useful tool when exploring new aircraft designs
This algorithm, written in Python programming language, evaluates cradle-to-grave environmental impacts of aircraft concepts using simple input parameters that are available to the designer during early design stages. This tool is then used to compare the environmental footprint of a freighter aircraft in different configurations and scenarios. The goal of AEco is to be a versatile tool that could be used by non-experts. Since its main use case is based around comparisons, achieving highly-accurate absolute values not a project driver. Furthermore, by using the tool in the early design stages, its inputs are only available with limited precision, which means that the accuracy of results is also bounded.
